She has worked in a number of movies and television shows. She’s well-known for her work in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali films. Apart from movies and television shows, she has hosted and judged a number of reality shows. Early Life and Background

Rakhi Sawant was born and brought up in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She belongs to a conservative Hindu family. Her father, Anand Sawant is Marathi and works as a constable at Worli Police Station while her mother, Jaya Bheda is a Gujarati and a housewife. She has a brother named Rakesh Sawant who is a film director and a sister named Usha Sawant who is also a former actress. She completed her schooling from Goklibai High school in Mumbai and then went to Mithibai College to complete her graduation. She was always interested in joining the entertainment industry but her conservative family didn’t allow her to do so which further made her rebel against their policies in order to do what she wanted to do.

Rakhi was dating Abhishek Awasthi but then broke up with him in 2008. Later in November 2018, she announced that she’ll marry Deepak Kalal, an internet celebrity on December 2018 but then told media that she has cancelled her marriage with him and that he’s engaged to another girl. She got married to a UK based businessman named Ritesh in 2019. She was seen confessing in Bigg Boss season 14 that she asked her husband to make a public appearance but he refused as he’s too shy to be on camera.

Career

Rakhi approached a number of directors and got rejected so many times but then she got her first major breakthrough in the film Agnichakra in 1997. She did a lot of small roles and dance numbers in a number of Bollywood films like Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai, Joru Ka Ghulam etc. She auditioned for an item number in the film, Chura Liya Hai Tumne in 2003 four times but made her breakthrough for her item number for the song Mohabbat Hai Mirchi. She did supporting roles in movies like Masti, Main Hoon Na etc.

She received a lot of attention from the media from the Mika Singh ‘kiss’ incident. She got so much recognition from several reality shows that she did including Bigg Boss, Nach Baliye etc. Apart from that, she has won the reality show, Yeh Hai Jalwa. She’s a life member of International Film And Television Club of Asian Academy Of Film and Television. She’s currently seen on the television show Bigg Boss 14 as a challenger.

Controversies

There are a number of controversies revolving around Rakhi Sawant. She has always been the centre of controversies. 

  • She was forcefully kissed by Mika Singh in the year 2016. The incident gained a lot of media attention and Rakhi filed a molestation case against him after that.
  • Rakhi slapped her boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi in 2008 in public on Valentine’s Day.
  • She once said that she likes Baba Ramdev and wants to marry him.
  • A Ludhiana based advocate, Narinder Aditya filed a complaint against her for hurting the sentiments of the Valmiki community as she called Valmiki a murderer in 2016. She was even arrested for her remarks on Rishi Valmiki in 2017 by Punjab police.
  • Rakhi said that she wanted prime minister Narendra Modi to win the election as she was a huge fan of him and she even wanted to make him her boyfriend.
  • Rakhi Sawant hosted a talk show in 2010 called, Rakhi ka Insaaf after which a contestant committed suicide because of her insulting language.
